Six of the Best Norfolk Golf Courses
Norfolk has many gifts, but more so than any other county it is endowed with a disproportionate share of first class golf courses. Whether it's the venerable Brancaster, the idyllic Hunstanton, or the luxury of our very own Heacham Manor, Norfolk really is a golfer's paradise.
In this week's blog we guide you through six of the best golf courses Norfolk has to offer.
Designed by Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss in 1923, Kings Lynn Golf Club is an 18 hole, 6609 yard, private, par 72 golf course. Situated close to the Royal Estate of Sandringham, it is one of Norfolk's finest and most challenging golf courses. Boasting sumptuous tree lined fairways, and invitingly large greens, the golf course presents a challenge to golfers of all levels.
Visitors are welcome at Kings Lynn Golf Club and green fees begin at £15 for juniors and £20 for adults.
Founded in 1891, Hunstanton Golf Club is a championship level golf course. It is a traditional links course, with spectacular sea views from the 2nd, 5th, 11th and 16th holes. The course, with its hazardous bunkers and treacherous greens, is particularly challenging, and handicap certificates are required to play.
Visitors are welcome, but tee times must be booked in advance. Green fees begin at £50.
Sheringham Golf Club began life as a nine hole golf course in 1891, before being extended to a full 18 hole course seven years laters in 1898. While it may not be one of the most well known courses in Norfolk, it is perhaps one of the most picturesque. The area, sandwiched between cliffs of Sheringham and the North Norfolk Railway Line, is a certified Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The par 70 course boasts a number of particularly demanding par 4s. Sheringham Golf Club is open to visitors, and green fees begin at £50 per person.
Brancaster Golf Club, or to give it it's official name, the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, was founded in 1892. Upon its opening, it was conferred with the patronage of the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, giving the course its 'Royal' title.
A par 71, Brancaster is another of Norfolk's testing, but spectacular, links courses. Depending on the strength of the wind, the back 9 is known to be particularly difficult. The location of Brancaster, flanked by the North Sea and saltmarshes, provides for some of the county's finest views.
Brancaster is a two ball course for singles and foursomes. Visitors can play at Brancaster, but will have to enquire in advance as to availability. Green fees start at £70 for singles and £50 for foursomes.
Designed by Tom Morris, the Royal Cromer Golf Club was founded in 1888. Like Brancaster, Cromer was patronised by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, who was also one of the founding members. Not content with the Prince of Wales, Cromer also attracted such Victorian luminaries as Oscar Wilde and Alfred Lord Tennyson. The golf course, which today boasts 700 members, provides stunning vistas of the Cromer coastline, and a challenging but enjoyable round of golf.
Cromer is open to visitors all year round, and green fees start at £20 in winter and £30 in summer.
The new kid on the Norfolk golf block, Heacham Manor Golf Course opened as recently as 2009. This quickly maturing golf course, praised as 'Norfolk's most exciting new club' by UK magazine Club Golfer, was designed as an American resort style course to be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels. The first golf hotel in the North West of Norfolk. Heacham Manor Golf Course is an 18 hole course with four lakes providing a sporting obstacle throughout the course, while the greens are some of the best maintained in the country.
